I admit, It’s a little counterintuitive to name a venture firm after the stereotypically slow-moving animal. Startups are supposed to move fast. But the sea turtle is a perfect analogy.

In the beginning, hundreds of sea turtle eggs buried in the sand. When the babies hatch, they struggle out of their shell and awkwardly make their way towards the ocean. Only a few make the journey, but the ones that do become a long-living majestic creature.

The fact is turtles are one of the longest living animals on Earth, with one recorded tortoise living to 256 years old. The goal of startups should be to survive, thrive, and make a difference long term - much longer than the 18 month financing cycle.

The companies that understand the compounding effects of efficiency and network effects are the ones that will thrive forever. Growth matters, but healthy growth matters even more.
